Getting Started |
Before you can start to drive a car, you
must hold a valid provisional driving licence for Great Britain or Northern
Ireland. You must also be able to read a standard size number plate from a distance of 20.5
metres. You can apply for a provisional licence up to 3 months before your 17th
birthday but you cannot start to drive or take the theory test until your
licence is valid on your 17th birthday.
To apply for a licence by post complete a
D1 form from the Post Office,
or apply online at www.direct.gov.uk
For your first driving
lesson its very important for me to choose a suitable area to begin, somewhere
quiet with straight level roads is ideal. After I have picked you up, checked
your provisional driving licence and made sure that your eyesight passes the
basic requirement, I will drive us to our practice area, we can then swap seats and
I'll teach you the routine to use every time you prepare to drive a car.
I will explain all the main
hand and foot controls, what they do and how and when to use them. I
will then explain the routine to use to safely move off and stop the
car. Then when you are ready, you can practice moving off and stopping,
we can then repeat this as many times as necessary.
For subsequent lessons it
is very important for me to choose an appropriate route which suits your
current ability. Obviously this will depend on where you live or where you
choose to start and finish your lessons. There is a good variation of
routes around the Radstock, Midsomer Norton and Peasedown St John area.
For students starting their lessons from the Paulton, Timsbury,
Farmborough, Temple Cloud and Clutton areas it is usually best to choose
routes around Keynsham and Saltford.
Lesson lengths can be
varied to suit the needs and ability of the student. As you improve and
approach your test it will often be necessary to practice on some of the
test routes. I use the Brislington driving test centre, so for many students,
especially those living further from Bristol eg. Chilcompton, Radstock,
Peasedown St John, a 2 hour lesson will sometimes be more appropriate.
